HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol or, in Spanish, Hypertext Transfer Protocol), is a protocol that allows the transfer of information on the Internet. In basic terms, it would be the way through which we exchange information on the web.
HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure or, in Spanish, Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure), is the secure version of HTTP. Basically, it makes this exchange of information happen in a secure way within the Internet.
What is HTTP and HTTPS
What is the difference between HTTP and HTTPS?
In order not to overwhelm you with technicalities that do not interest you and will not help you, I am going to leave you with the visual aspect of it (beyond the HUGE technical differences), so that you know how to recognize a secure website from an unsecure one.
An unsecured website looks like this in a browser:
HTTP protocol not secure
Now a secure website will look like this:
HTTPS secure protocol
It will generally be green, and will have the famous “padlock”.
Why is it important for me to know? Keep reading and you know it.
Why migrate from HTTP to HTTPS today
The main reason is Google, master of the Internet.
Google has long wanted us to have a secure website, that is, with the use of the HTTPS protocol. In 2014 it announced that the use of HTTPS became part of its more than 200 ranking factors. This affected only 1% of search results at the time, but gradually the appearance of HTTPS results over HTTP began to increase more and more.
In April 2017, Moz noted that already 50% of English search results were from HTTPS websites. By October 2017, Google made official its announcement to begin marking those sites that continue on HTTP as NOT SECURE.
Having a more secure website is one of Google’s objectives, and it is doing everything possible so that all of us who have a website migrate to HTTPS… and this being the main source of qualified traffic for any Online Business, it is not can ignore. To keep quiet and obey, if you want to continue having good web positioning in the future!
So, if you have a website or blog, and you haven’t migrated to HTTPS yet: do it right now!
I leave you a 4-step guide to Google Search Console to do this.
